According Linda Powell on Building Strong Foundation with Dublin Core, SDMX appeared to be geared toward aggregate time series data rather than cross sectional-data (SDMX Standards) and DDI provide good collection-level metadata as well as extensive variable-level metadata. However, at the time DDI was reviewed, it did not allow for data collections that persisted over time. In addition, the variable-level metadata were geared toward social science survey data.
